Here are my tips on finding a sexy and loving Chinese wife today:

First of all China is a vast country with a big population. Even if 0.001% of Chinese ladies want to find a Western husband, that's still an awful lot of ladies!

China is geographically huge, and in fact is more like a continent than a country. As a result of its size, Chinese ladies are very variable in height, skin color etc. There really is a Chinese lady that can satisfy any man's tastes!

Oh, and I'll reiterate - contrary to what my mother thinks, Chinese ladies do not all look the same!

You'll tend to find that ladies from the southern provinces (i.e. cities such as Guangzhou and Shenzen) are shorter and darker skinned. Ladies from the more northerly cities such as Beijing, Wuhan and Shanghai are taller and have lighter skin. But due to massive migration from the countryside China's many ethnic groups are now tending to live side by side in the rapidly developing cities.

Generally Chinese ladies are quite tall compared to their Thai or Filipina sisters. Chinese ladies who are 5' 6" or taller are fairly common. Wow. Tall ladies are great. Tall Asian ladies - incredible!

There are many Chinese dating sites - chnlove, Cherry Blossoms, Asian Kisses, chineselovelinks are but a few. Many Chinese ladies look for a husband through an agency, hence it's not uncommon to find a lady on several websites. Not all agencies are totally honest, so be careful.

I am sorry to have to write this but I have found out to my cost that the Chinese are not always honest. Is this a trait of their culture? I do not know.

So please, be extra careful when dating a Chinese lady. I am in no doubt that there are many good and honest Chinese ladies out there. But there are many cheats and liars as well.

Here's my tips to being careful and avoiding Chinese dating scams:

• Never send money before you meet her, unless it's connected to your travel plans.
• Wise up! Learn how much things cost in China. Find out how much your lady earns. Then realise when you send her $500 it's a fortune to her!
• If the lady or a family member or friend gets sick and mentions medical bills, then bale out of that relationship!
• If communicating through letters, make sure you can also speak to her on instant messenger and or webcam.
• Be wary of ladies who have recently signed up for dating sites, although this isn't always a good way to spot scammers as some are particularly devious.
• Sign up for every Chinese dating site you can, and see if your lady is listed. Don't mention that you've seen her on another site. Then once you get to a serious stage of the relationship you can see if she's still keeping her options open.
• Be especially careful on sites where the ladies themselves can sign up. Sites like blossoms.com are a free for all, and are full of scammers. The site operators do their best to identify scam ladies, but unfortunately the scammers sign up more quickly than the sites can remove their profiles.
• Don't be too paranoid! Not every lady is trying to scam you!
  

Look - most scams involve money. If you are careful with your money, you should avoid being scammed.

If a scam doesn't involve money, then it involves a visa. Getting a visa to enable a lady to live in a Western country is a meal ticket for life. So please be aware of ladies just looking for a visa. China is a rapidly developing economy. But there is a vast gulf between rich and poor. Most of the improvements in living standards have been at the top end of society. At the bottom, life is tough. But if you fall ill or can't work then life is intolerable.

Ways of checking for visa scams:

• If a lady is in a hurry to get married, be wary.
• If there is more than 5 years age difference between you and your lady then be vigilant. This thing about Asian ladies liking older men, I don't think it's that true. Look at Japanese dating sites - how many 24 year old girls are looking for 50-60 year old men? Yes it inflates our egos to think a young lady is interested in us, but don't be fooled. While love is blind and doesn't care about age differences, a touch of realism is also called for.
• Some Western countries have fiancee visa schemes - make use of them if you suspect the lady is after a visa. This gives you time to check her out in your own country.

Another disadvantage of Chinese ladies is that their language is hard for us Westerners to master. Many of the ladies on Chinese dating websites speak little to no English. If this is a problem for you then you should stick to the ladies that speak some or fluent English - many Chinese ladies do.

As well as the language difference, there are vast cultural differences. Major differences include:

• The concept of face. It is important for a Chinese person never to lose face, especially in front of other people.
• The Chinese place huge importance in the family unit. A husband is important to a Chinese lady, but her family will be the most important thing of all. You may need to help support her family. She'll almost certainly want to visit them even if you live abroad.
• The Chinese are very sociable by their nature.
• The Chinese respect their elderly people a lot more than we do in Western societies.

Finally, a Chinese lady will keep her options open until you get engaged. I'm not sure if this is purely a Chinese thing though. It is what it is. Keep your own options open and do not fall too deeply in love until you both get married.
